The most common types of carvings found on private mausoleums are Shape Carving, a Flat Carving and Full Relief. The benefits of each type are described below.

Shape Carving

Picture
A shape carving is more intricate than a flat carving because it offers texture and depth. Shape carvings are often best executed on a floral design.

Notice the shape and texture of the rose in the picture to the left. On this design the Cross is flat carved while the rose and petals are shape carved.

The art of shape carving had been lost among many current mausoleum builders. Great Mausoleums guarantees that all shape carved designs are completed using traditional methods that ensure the desired shape of the flower is presented in stone.

A flat carving provides only an outline of the design and has no shape or dimension. Flat Carvings are the least expensive type of carving and are a cost effective to improve the appearance of a private mausoleum.

Any type of design can be completed using flat carving. Religious designs such as a Cross or a Star of David are often completed by flat carving.

Full relief carving

A relief carving is a 3 dimensional carving that is sculpted using hand tooling. The relief carving is the most prestigious type of carving that can be included in a mausoleum design. Most often religious figures including saints are the subject

Producing a relief carving is a skill that was more common in past generations. There are still many qualified carvers working in the trades today and they are capable of producing tremendous results.
